RYA Radar

General Description

The RYA Radar course is a 1 day, combination theory / practical classroom course. Introducing you to the operational principles of RADAR, the course assists you in learning to use this invaluable aid for navigation and collision avoidance

Preventing collisions and learning how to detect adverse weather at sea are crucial skills that every skipper should have.

We structure the course with alternating theory and practical modules to increase your learning options, using classroom simulators or by using a RADAR on board one of our vessels.

Upon completion of the RYA RADAR course, you will obtain your Certificate. This course will increase your knowledge to help you be safer on board and achieve your next RYA qualification. We highly recommend this course to all students from RYA Day Skipper to RYA Yachtmaster Offshore, but there are no prerequisites to participate.

The course will cover, among other things, the following topics:

  • Setting up the RADAR unit

  • The RADAR picture, and how to refine it

  • Understanding what is on your screen

  • Blind areas

  • RADAR reflectors

  • Fixing the position by RADAR

  • Pilotage by RADAR

  • Collision avoidance

Prerequisites for this course:
