RYA Day Skipper Theory
General Description
The Newport RYA Day Skipper Theory is a shorebased course that introduces students to nautical terms, ropework, anchoring, navigation, and safety at sea.
This includes the compass, tides, the basic concepts of navigation theory (planning a route, triangulation, etc.), pilotage, course, and speed. It will also cover navigation, buoyage, meteorology, and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (our friendly COLREGS). You will work with both book exercises and some real-life situations and live assessments of the weather as it evolves throughout the class.
We also highly recommend the online version of the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course, so that you have more flexibility in your learning process.

Following your RYA Day Skipper Theory Course, you can continue your journey with our sister school Second Star Sailing, and take your RYA Day Skipper Practical course.
We suggest that all skippers take the RYA SRC Radio Course, for knowledge and safety. Taking the RYA Diesel Engine course is also a good fit at this time… just in case.

There is a possibility to do an Online Day Skipper Theory course delivered by Ardent Training, an RYA-recognized Training Centre specialized in online training. Students who complete the online course and pass the Day Skipper Theory exam obtain the Day Skipper Theory Completion Certificate – ready to come join us onboard!
